Ecological Restoration Project
(Breithaupt Park, Major park, Uniroyal Goodrich Park, etc.)
Neighbours are invited to attend a design planning session hosted by UW graduate student, Katelyn Inlow. Come and make suggestions. Share ideas. Let us know how you envision an ecological restoration project in our neighbourhood.
Date: Saturday, April 18, 2009
Time: 12:00 (noon) – 3:00 p.m.
Location: Extend-A-Family, Boardroom
91 Moore Avenue, Kitchener
(former WCDSB office beside former Sacred Heart School)
Everyone is welcome!
Several important ideas came out of this meeting.
1. One participant came up with the idea of "gateway" gardens (or "pocket parks") in very small plots of land we see around the area, often close to intersections. Everyone reading this should look out for these kinds of opportunities where we could plant local, and low maintenance, plants.
2. A new reservoir pond was created near B.F. Goodrich park near the tracks (Guelph and railway tracks). This needs to be landscaped according to the city's own rules, so it will be made an agenda item at the next NMA meeting. Dave Schmidt, Environmental & Urban Forestry Project Manager from the city will try and get some information on this pond that "just got created" as well.
3. The city is planning some seminars in the fall regarding local parks and restoring parts of them. Some of us will sign up for these. Information will be posted on this Blog when it's available.
4. We decided to be part of "Jane's Walk" this year (see Blog posting about this).
