2nd Annual MHBPNA Soapbox Derby Race

It has been almost a year and we are working on getting our second annual MHBPNA soapbox derby race ready to go!

If you missed the last one, it was held at the end of the summer on the Louisa Street hill, just off Margaret Ave. We had four, enthusiastic racers.  We ran several test runs, test races and a couple heats. A winner was crowned before noon.  Good times were had by all!

Famous Families, Fugitive Slaves, and a Forgotten Soldier: 150 Years of History in Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery

We will visit the memorials for the World War 1 soldier that was forgotten for 90 years until his war medal was discovered, a pioneering black family that escaped slavery in the southern US in the 1840s, and some famous families that still have their names on buildings that were built when the city of Kitchener was the town of Berlin. We'll visit Berlin's first tire maker and Berlin's first button maker (who had an employee who made great sausages). And we'll hear how these people helped these industries become a part of Berlin's powerful manufacturing sector.

MHBP: From East to West and Past to Future

The Mount Hope - Breithaupt Park Neighbourhood began as Kitchener’s industrial suburb and part of that legacy continues. But it is also developing as a tech hub and the landscape is being reformed by the Weber street widening. Our short walk [mainly] along Breithaupt Street will show a diverse area with many exciting developments. But we must also remember our heritage and actively pursue livability and walkability.
